Description
The Mark XIIA Mode 5 Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) system is a key element in the Navy's aircraft modification efforts. This initiative aims to enhance secure cooperative combat identification through a two-way encrypted datalink, improving situational awareness and reducing fratricide. It is part of the Combat Identification Family of Systems strategy used by both U.S. and NATO/Allied forces. The implementation of Mode 5 follows specific Department of Defense requirements to ensure interoperability between military and civilian aircraft.

The main goal of the Mark XIIA Mode 5 IFF program is to upgrade existing Mode 4 IFF equipment across various Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard aircraft. This includes engineering changes to digital MARK XII interrogators and transponders, along with associated cryptographic material. The program also addresses component obsolescence issues and new IFF performance standards, ensuring that the equipment remains supportable for both air and ship platforms. The Joint Requirements Oversight Council has endorsed the full operational capability of Mode 5, with installations continuing through fiscal year 2024.

Regarding procurement and installation, the program involves both recurring and non-recurring costs for equipment upgrades and integration efforts. BAE Systems in Greenlawn, NY, is responsible for manufacturing the necessary components with a production lead time of 18 months. The installation process includes field install kits and vendor depot engineering change proposal installs to ensure that all forward-deployed aircraft are fully capable of utilizing Mode 5 technology. Additionally, training and support costs are estimated based on platform requirements to facilitate smooth integration across various aircraft models.

The Mark XIIA Mode 5 IFF program represents a significant capability improvement for U.S. military aviation assets. By enhancing secure identification capabilities and ensuring compatibility with allied forces' systems, this initiative supports broader defense objectives related to operational readiness and mission success. As installations continue into future fiscal years, the program will focus on addressing any remaining gaps in coverage while maintaining alignment with evolving technological standards.
