Description
The Identification Systems program, managed by the Navy, focuses on enhancing and modernizing identification systems across naval platforms. It emphasizes procuring and implementing Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs) to address obsolescence and adapt to evolving technological requirements. Key systems involved include the AN/UPX-37, AN/UPX-41, AN/UPX-45, and AN/UPX-50 Digital Interrogators, as well as the AN/APX-118 and AN/APX-123 Common Digital Transponders. These systems are crucial for Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) capabilities that ensure secure identification of military assets.
A primary objective is to upgrade existing systems with open architecture designs that allow for future growth and integration with new technologies. This includes incorporating Mode 5 capabilities into digital interrogators and transponders, enhancing secure cooperative combat identification. The program also addresses hardware updates for IFF systems on various ship classes, including LCS variants and Coast Guard ships, ensuring compliance with Mode 5 requirements.
The program supports modernization efforts such as the DDG 1000 Zumwalt Class IFF Sensor Suite upgrade. This involves product improvements and engineering changes to integrate advanced Electronically Scanned Array (ESA) antennas and other components. Additionally, the OE-120/UPX antenna systems are set to receive upgrade kits to improve reliability and maintainability through current technology applications.
The Identification Systems program is a comprehensive effort to maintain and enhance naval communication and electronic equipment capabilities. By addressing obsolescence issues and integrating new technologies, it ensures that naval forces remain equipped with state-of-the-art identification systems essential for operational effectiveness in complex environments.
