Description
The High Energy Laser Research Initiatives, managed by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, aim to advance fundamental science in directed-energy technologies. This initiative focuses on two primary areas: directed energy sources and beam control and propagation. The goal is to provide foundational scientific knowledge to support the development of future Department of Defense directed energy weapon systems. By supporting multi-disciplinary research institutes through the Joint Directed Energy Transition Office, the program explores high energy laser and high power microwave technologies.
A key objective is to foster collaboration with academia to stimulate student interest and encourage graduate research in related fields. This collaboration aims to build a pipeline of expertise in high energy laser and high power microwave technologies. The program emphasizes coordination through the Department of Defense Science and Technology Executive Committee to ensure efforts are harmonized and duplication is minimized. This strategic alignment supports long-term national security needs by enhancing fundamental knowledge in physical, engineering, environmental, and life sciences.
In FY 2024, the program plans to investigate innovative laser technologies with potential for power scalability in high energy laser applications. It will also focus on alternative defense capabilities and counter-capabilities by monitoring both national and international technological advancements. Research will be conducted on microwave technologies, including sources, antennas, and component technologies, with an emphasis on leveraging international advancements.
For FY 2025, the initiatives will continue focusing on foundational research in laser and microwave technologies. The program will explore innovative beam control phenomenology and methods for measuring, modeling, and manipulating beam propagation. By investigating high energy laser and high power microwave architectures that could revolutionize performance, the initiative aims to maintain a technological edge while adapting to inflationary adjustments reflected in its financial planning.
