Description
The Future Interceptor program is a key component of the Army's Air and Missile Defense Modernization Priority. Its primary objective is to enhance defense capabilities against current and emerging threats, including air, missile, and hypersonic threats within the lower tier of the ballistic missile defense battlespace. The program aims to improve interceptor characteristics such as velocity, altitude, and maneuverability. This initiative involves refining architecture design and concept definitions, conducting performance studies, and developing acquisition strategies to inform future competitive vendor selection processes.

A significant focus of the Future Interceptor program is on advancing Virtual Missile Model (VMM) development. This effort supports the establishment of concept definitions that are crucial for validating technical approaches. These approaches will guide future efforts to down-select to a single vendor through competitive processes. The program also emphasizes integrating survivability, resiliency, and effectiveness improvements against advanced threats from near-peer adversaries.

The program employs a strategic acquisition approach using the Defense Ordnance Technology Consortium (DOTC) Other Transactions Agreements (OTA). This strategy facilitates competitive initial concept definition with two contractors, leveraging detailed modeling and simulation alongside prototype development of high-risk hardware technologies. The resulting technologies and designs will inform the selection of an acquisition strategy that best supports the program's objectives.

In terms of planned activities, the program will continue to provide technical support for requirements development and modeling & simulation work in FY 2024. By FY 2025, efforts will focus on developing contracting structures and preparing Requests for Proposal (RFP) for subsequent development contracts. Additionally, assessments of Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) will be conducted to ensure critical technology elements are mature enough for development. These activities aim to derive technical performance requirements based on user needs outlined in the Capability Development Document.
