Description
The Environmental Support Equipment program within the Navy focuses on enhancing operational capabilities through the acquisition of advanced technological systems. This initiative supports Mine Warfare Operations by acquiring high-speed, high-resolution digital side scan sonar systems. These systems are crucial for detecting small mine-like targets and hazards to navigation, such as wrecks, and for characterizing the sea floor over large areas. The program aims to install these sonar systems aboard specific naval vessels to improve imagery data collection, which is essential for generating products that support mine warfare, hydrographic, and oceanographic requirements.
Additionally, the program includes the procurement of Long Term Ambient Noise Recording and Reporting Systems. These moored acoustic buoy systems are designed to support Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions by recording ambient noise over extended periods. The data collected from these systems will be processed to enhance environmental characterization efforts.
Another key component is the Ship Moving Vessel Profiler (MVP), which provides high-accuracy sound velocity measurements from moving platforms. This capability is vital for meeting accuracy requirements in hydrographic and bathymetric surveys.
The program also includes non-acoustic oceanographic measurement systems to support Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear (SSBN) operations. These systems assess vulnerability threats against emerging adversary technologies by enabling persistent non-acoustic sensing and data collection. Furthermore, it supports the lifecycle replacement of existing equipment with updated technology to maintain operational effectiveness across various naval platforms.
In addition to these technological advancements, the program addresses communication needs through the Ship To Shore Data Communications system. This system provides two-way satellite voice and data broadband communications essential for maintaining remote Information Awareness/Information Technology configuration and upgrade support while vessels are underway. The Environmental Support Equipment program aims to enhance naval capabilities through strategic investments in advanced technology and infrastructure upgrades.
