Description
The EA-18 Squadrons program is focused on enhancing the capabilities of the EA-18G Growler, the primary Airborne Electronic Attack platform for the Joint Force. This initiative aims to maintain and improve the Growler's effectiveness in non-permissive environments by ensuring electromagnetic spectrum superiority. The program's objectives include modernizing onboard sensors, such as the ALQ-218, to better detect and identify complex threats at extended ranges. Additionally, it seeks to integrate new hardware and software upgrades that will enhance the aircraft's ability to process and respond to unknown signals autonomously.
A significant component of this effort is the development of the Growler Block II upgrade, which introduces innovative capabilities necessary for maintaining an advantage in electronic warfare until a replacement is available. This upgrade includes enhancements like the Next Generation Electronic Attack Unit and Reactive Electronic Attack Measures, which utilize machine learning algorithms to counter advanced Integrated Air Defense Systems. The program also focuses on improving communication capabilities through initiatives like Global Lightning, which provides Beyond Line of Sight communication via satellite constellations.
The program emphasizes software development through System Configuration Set updates and Agile software integration. These updates are designed to improve active and passive kill chain capabilities and enhance sensor integration. It supports ongoing engineering efforts for avionics system design and integration, ensuring that the Growler remains tactically relevant in future operations.
Through continuous development and testing, these efforts aim to maximize the availability of critical assets while minimizing total ownership costs over their lifecycle. By addressing current capability gaps and preparing for future challenges, this program ensures that the EA-18G Growler continues to support joint force operations effectively across various domains.
