0300D - Procurement, Defense-Wide
Description
The Defense Information System Network (DISN) is a comprehensive telecommunications infrastructure managed by the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). Its primary goal is to provide seamless, end-to-end information transport for Department of Defense (DoD) operations, supporting warfighters and Combatant Commanders with a robust communication network. The DISN integrates various communication technologies, including terrestrial, subsea, wireless, and satellite communications, into a network cloud that is both survivable and dynamically scalable. This integration ensures that operational missions can be planned and executed efficiently across different domains.
One of the key objectives of the DISN is to maintain and enhance its infrastructure through technology refresh initiatives. This involves periodic replacement and upgrading of system components to prevent obsolescence and ensure continued supportability. The Enhanced Pentagon Capability (EPC) and Survivable Emergency Conferencing Network (SECN) are critical components that provide classified communication capabilities for senior leaders. These networks must meet stringent performance criteria to ensure they are always available and operating optimally.
The DISN also focuses on supporting Airborne Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Data Transport (AISR-DT), which aids Combatant Commanders in gathering and analyzing sensor data for strategic decision-making. Additionally, the Defense Red Switch Network (DRSN) offers secure voice calling and conferencing capabilities at various security levels for key defense personnel. Procurement efforts within DISN aim to combine commercial best practices with unique DoD capabilities to create a resilient global communications infrastructure.
Furthermore, the DISN's objectives include enhancing Internet Protocol (IP) enabling capabilities by supporting the DoD Network Information Center (NIC). This involves managing domain name systems for both classified and unclassified networks to ensure secure communication channels. The DISN Hypercore Reconfiguration initiative adds resiliency to the core infrastructure by addressing vulnerabilities that could impact critical operations. These efforts are designed to maintain the integrity and effectiveness of the DoD's communication networks in an ever-evolving technological landscape.
