2034A - Procurement of Ammunition, Army
Description
The CTG, 7.62MM, All Types program focuses on procuring various types of 7.62mm ammunition for the Army. This initiative supports training and combat operations by ensuring a steady supply of different cartridge types, including blanks, ball and tracer rounds, enhanced performance rounds, long-range cartridges, advanced armor-piercing rounds, and reduced range ammunition. The primary objective is to maintain a robust inventory that meets the needs of active and reserve components for operational readiness and training purposes.
The program includes specific goals for each type of ammunition. The 7.62mm Blank M82 cartridges are intended solely for training purposes to simulate combat scenarios without live fire. The 7.62mm 4 Ball M80/1 Tracer M62 rounds are used in both training and combat to engage personnel and non-armored targets effectively. The M80A1 Enhanced Performance Round (EPR) is designed with a steel penetrator for use against light-armored targets. Meanwhile, the M118 Long Range cartridge is tailored for sniper use with precision over extended distances.
Additionally, the program aims to support war reserve requirements by building an inventory that aligns with the Army's strategic goals. This includes maintaining minimum sustaining rates at production facilities like Lake City Army Ammunition Plant (LCAAP) and a secondary source in Oxford, MS. The procurement strategy involves leveraging contract negotiations and foreign military sales to optimize cost efficiencies and increase ammunition acquisition when feasible.
The CTG, 7.62MM, All Types program ensures that the Army is equipped with necessary ammunition types to support various operational scenarios while adhering to environmental initiatives through lead-free projectiles in certain cartridges. Its comprehensive approach addresses both immediate training needs and long-term operational readiness through strategic procurement planning and inventory management.
