Description
The Counterfire Radars program, specifically the AN/TPQ-53 Counterfire Target Acquisition Radar System, is designed to enhance the Army's capabilities in detecting and tracking projectiles from various artillery systems. This system automatically locates the origin of mortar, artillery, and rocket fire with high accuracy. Its primary goal is to mitigate radar coverage gaps in close combat scenarios by providing both a 90-degree search sector and a full 360-degree coverage. The AN/TPQ-53 system integrates with mission command systems to offer increased flexibility for maneuver commanders and communicates digitally with the Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System (AFATDS) for rapid targeting data transmission.

The program also focuses on modernization efforts through the development of the Distributed Digital Receiver Exciter (DDREX), which addresses obsolescence and enhances survivability in electronically contested environments. This modernization includes engineering development, design, prototyping, subsystem integration, and survivability software updates. The DDREX initiative builds upon previous advancements such as Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology and aims to improve electronic protection and secure contractor facilitization. Initial production assets are expected to undergo testing in early FY 2025 to support procurement decisions.

Additionally, the program includes several modification efforts to ensure continued operational effectiveness and compliance with evolving requirements. These modifications address obsolescence in inertial navigation units, ensure cybersecurity compliance through TEMPEST countermeasure kits, and implement condition-based maintenance plus (CBM+) software updates. Other efforts involve procuring generator/environmental control unit kits for improved supportability and refreshing remote control display units with new ruggedized laptops. These initiatives are part of a comprehensive strategy to maintain system performance, reliability, and supportability across various operational contexts.

The Counterfire Radars program aligns with the Army's Long Range Precision Fires Modernization Priority, aiming to enhance radar capabilities for effective counterfire operations while ensuring interoperability with existing command systems. It supports both active and reserve components of the Armed Forces for homeland defense missions and military support to civil authorities. Through these efforts, the program seeks to maintain technological superiority in countering artillery threats while adapting to emerging challenges in electronic warfare environments.
