Description
The Common Defensive Weapon System (CDWS) is part of the Navy's Aircraft Procurement initiative, focusing on aircraft modifications. Its primary goal is to enhance the defensive capabilities of US Navy and Marine Corps helicopters, including the MV-22, CH-53E/K, and UH-1Y. The program aims to replace outdated weapon systems with the GAU-21 .50 caliber machine gun, which includes a cradle, ammo box, feed/link chutes, and platform-specific mount systems.
A key objective of the CDWS is to provide a safer, more reliable, and accurate weapon system with a higher rate of fire. This enhancement is crucial for improving warfighter capabilities. Modifications for the CH-53K helicopter include options for ramp, door, and window-mounted systems. Additionally, the program supports improvements to other crew-served weapons such as the GAU-17 (M134A1), GPU-8/9A, and M240D.
The CDWS also focuses on sustaining current demands through logistics management and addressing future readiness initiatives. This involves updates to technical data packages, kit parts procurement and fielding, provisioning, and sustainment requirements. The FY 2025 increase supports initiatives aimed at extending weapon service life and implementing product improvements.
Furthermore, the program addresses enhancements like integrating Automated Shot Counter technology and improving gun control units for better operational efficiency. These efforts are part of a strategy to equip fleet forces with advanced defensive systems that meet evolving operational needs while maintaining high standards of safety and reliability.
