Description
The Command and Control Switchboard program is a critical initiative within the Navy's ship support equipment category, focusing on enhancing the operational capabilities of naval vessels. This program aims to provide essential switching capabilities that integrate various shipboard combat systems, including weapons, sensors, and navigation equipment. The switchboards serve as central hubs for data transfer and command systems, ensuring seamless communication and control across different ship components. By accommodating both analog and digital interfaces, these switchboards support approximately 200 ships and 1,000 pieces of equipment throughout their lifecycle.
A key objective of the Command and Control Switchboard program is to maintain intra- and inter-system compatibility within naval combat systems. As changes occur in other elements of the combat and interior communication systems, the program facilitates necessary modifications to switchboards through ship change documents (SCDs), ordnance alterations (ORDALTs), or field changes (FCs). These modifications may involve hardware updates, technical manual revisions, and other supporting documentation adjustments. The program also addresses hull-specific configurations, requiring unique design and installation procedures for each ship class.
The procurement process for switchboard hardware is conducted through competitive bidding from manufacturers listed on Qualified Products List (QPL)-17000. Contracts are awarded as fixed-price agreements to ensure cost-effectiveness while maintaining high-quality standards. Engineering upgrades and modifications are crucial components of this program, driving the development of hardware modification kits necessary for integrating upgraded switching configurations. These efforts are vital for achieving Battle Force Interoperability, ensuring that all elements of the combat system function cohesively.
The Command and Control Switchboard program underscores the Navy's commitment to maintaining robust communication and control systems aboard its vessels. By continuously upgrading and modifying existing equipment, the program ensures that naval ships remain equipped with state-of-the-art technology capable of meeting evolving operational demands. Through strategic procurement and engineering efforts, this initiative supports the Navy's broader mission of enhancing maritime security and operational readiness.
