Description
The Communications Electronics Modifications (Comm Elect Mods) program within the Air Force is dedicated to enhancing and sustaining various communication and electronic systems. Its primary goal is to address issues related to diminishing manufacturing sources and material shortages, ensuring systems remain operationally effective and safe. This involves implementing modifications across several systems, including the Air Traffic Control and Landing Systems (ATCALS) and the National Airspace System (NAS), to improve reliability and maintainability.
For ATCALS, the program aims to resolve system deficiencies identified through various reviews and reports. These modifications are designed to decrease maintenance costs while enhancing system performance and safety. The NAS program, a joint effort with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), focuses on maintaining a standard configuration across both Department of Defense (DoD) and FAA systems. This includes upgrades to systems like the Digital Airport Surveillance Radar (DASR) and the Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System (STARS), which are crucial for maintaining interoperability with host-nation air traffic control systems.
The North Warning System (NWS) is another critical component of this program, concentrating on replacing obsolete hardware to extend system life and reduce maintenance costs. The Over-the-Horizon Backscatter Radar project also plays a significant role in addressing emerging operational needs by procuring necessary hardware for homeland defense missions. These initiatives collectively aim to ensure that communication and electronic systems within the Air Force remain robust, reliable, and ready for service.
The Comm Elect Mods program is vital for sustaining critical communication infrastructure within the Air Force. By focusing on resolving manufacturing source issues, implementing system upgrades, and maintaining interoperability with international partners, this program supports both domestic defense operations and broader military objectives.
