2031A - Aircraft Procurement, Army
Description
The CH-47 Helicopter program, with a focus on the CH-47F Chinook, is a vital part of the Army's Aviation Campaign Objective. This initiative seeks to modernize, equip, and sustain the Army Aviation Portfolio to effectively conduct Multi-Domain Operations as part of an integrated joint force. The CH-47F Chinook plays multiple roles, including troop transport, supply and resupply of weapons and equipment, and various cargo operations. It also supports secondary missions such as aircraft recovery, disaster relief, and search and rescue operations.
A primary goal of the CH-47 Helicopter program is enhancing the CH-47F Block I fleet through Digital Cockpit Support & Sustainment efforts. These efforts ensure software and hardware maintenance driven by factors like hardware electronics obsolescence and cybersecurity changes. The focus is on maintaining four critical capabilities: Position, Navigation and Timing, modern cryptographic communications, obsolescence management, and Training Aids, Devices, Simulators, and Simulations concurrency. These initiatives are crucial for maintaining operational readiness rates in large-scale combat environments.
The CH-47F Block II program introduces critical technologies to maintain operational capabilities while meeting Warfighter requirements. Improvements include refinements to rotor systems, fuel systems, electrical systems, and airframe strengthening for commonality with the MH-47G. The program also updates avionics systems like the Common Avionics Architecture System and Digital Advanced Flight Control System to ensure future upgrade provisions are in place for enhanced capability.
Additionally, the CH-47 Block II ReNew and New Build programs aim to rebuild or replace existing MH-47G Block I Special Operations Aircraft and CH-47F Block I aircraft to the Block II configuration. This effort is managed alongside the Technology Applications Program Office to replace aging fleets with components dating back over 45 years. The overarching objective is to ensure that these helicopters remain a vital asset for both Overseas Contingency Operations and Homeland Security needs well into the future.
