Description
The Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services (CANES) Intell program is a significant initiative by the Navy to modernize and secure tactical networks. Its primary goal is to replace outdated network systems with a cyber-hardened infrastructure, enhancing the Navy's information warfare capabilities. This involves providing a comprehensive network infrastructure, including hardware, software, processing, storage, and end-user devices for various security levels across Navy surface combatants, submarines, and other operational sites. By leveraging Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) hardware and software, CANES aims to reduce development time and costs while ensuring rapid upgrades through commercial IT approaches like DevSecOps.
The objectives of the CANES program include streamlining acquisition processes and achieving lifecycle efficiencies by consolidating multiple configuration management baselines into a unified support structure. This consolidation supports over 200 hosted applications essential for Command and Control, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, Information Operations, Logistics, and Business domains. Programs such as the Distributed Common Ground System - Navy (DCGS-N) and Global Command and Control System - Maritime (GCCS-M) now rely on CANES for their network infrastructure needs. Additionally, CANES provides Agile Core Services (ACS), which offer advanced data science capabilities to application developers.
In FY25, the program focuses on procuring Technical Insertion units across different levels of operation within the fleet. These units are integral to pre-installation design and installation processes for both afloat production units and ashore technical insertion units procured in FY24. The program also emphasizes regular technical updates to counter evolving cybersecurity threats and meet new operational demands. Future enhancements include integrating technologies such as Cloud computing, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence to further bolster the system's capabilities.
The CANES program is supported by a Multi Award Contract (MAC) that facilitates timely delivery of its components. This contract involves several vendors like Northrop Grumman Systems Corp., BAE Systems Technology Solutions & Services, General Dynamics C4 Systems, among others. The program's Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) initiative ensures ongoing enhancements in delivery speed and quality of network capabilities to the Fleet. Through these efforts, CANES aims to maintain its position as a mature program capable of meeting the Navy's current and future operational needs effectively.
