Description
The Bridge Supplemental Set (BSS) is designed to enhance the capabilities of Multi-Role Bridging Companies (MRBCs) by providing a comprehensive float bridge anchorage system. This system includes the Overhead Anchorage System (OCS), site stability matting, tool kits, and a Bridge Protection Device (BPD). The primary goal of the BSS is to ensure that MRBCs can effectively deploy and maintain bridges in various operational environments, particularly where debris protection is necessary. The integration of these components on M1077 Flatracks allows for efficient transportation using the Common Bridge Transporter (CBT).
A key objective of the BSS program is to equip each MRBC and relevant training institutions with two systems, while also allocating four systems to Army Prepositioned Stock (APS). The Bridge Protection Device will be distributed only to APS and training institutions, highlighting its strategic importance in prepositioned scenarios. The Army Acquisition Objective for the BSS is set at 72 units, ensuring that sufficient resources are available for both active deployment and training purposes.
The BSS plays a critical role in supporting homeland defense missions and domestic emergency responses by providing military support to civil authorities. This aligns with Section 1815 of the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act, which underscores the necessity of such equipment for both active and reserve components of the Armed Forces. By enhancing bridge deployment capabilities, the BSS contributes to maintaining infrastructure resilience during emergencies.
The Bridge Supplemental Set aims to bolster the operational readiness and flexibility of MRBCs through advanced bridging solutions. By focusing on procurement and distribution strategies that prioritize both immediate deployment needs and long-term preparedness, this program supports broader defense objectives related to infrastructure support and civil-military cooperation.
