Description
The B-52H Combat Network Communication Technology (CONECT) program is a critical initiative aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities of the B-52H fleet. This project focuses on upgrading the aircraft with advanced data and voice communications capabilities, as well as improved threat and situational awareness systems. These enhancements are designed to support both nuclear and conventional operations, ensuring that the B-52H can effectively participate in network-centric operations. The program involves the procurement of 74 aircraft kits and two Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) kits, which will be installed during Programmed Depot Maintenance (PDM).
A significant component of the CONECT program is the development and upgrade of B-52H training devices to incorporate full CONECT functionality. This includes enhancements to three B-52H Weapon System Trainers (WST) and two Offensive Station Mission Trainers (OSMT), as well as installations in the Systems Integration Lab (SIL). These upgrades are essential for providing comprehensive aircrew training, ensuring that personnel are fully prepared to operate the upgraded systems. Additionally, ground station mission planning hardware, support equipment, initial spares, and Interim Contractor Support (ICS) will be procured to facilitate these improvements.
The program also addresses Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS) by identifying items with high obsolescence risk potential and implementing resolutions such as non-recurring engineering or replacement costs. Efforts include transitioning to a modular, common open system architecture that is sustainable and cyber-resilient, in line with the Simulator Common Architecture Requirements and Standards (SCARS) initiative. Furthermore, funds may be allocated to resolve emerging safety of flight issues, accommodate technology insertion, and fulfill mandates from agencies like the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) to ensure continued aircrew safety and mission effectiveness.
Post Production Support funds are allocated for ICS until a dedicated depot for CONECT is established. The DMSMS efforts continue to maintain production configuration through careful monitoring and resolution implementation. This program also has associated Research Development Test and Evaluation (RDT&E) funding under Program Element 0101113F, highlighting its ongoing commitment to advancing technological capabilities within the B-52H fleet.
