2032A - Missile Procurement, Army
Description
The Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) is a vital part of the United States Army's strategic artillery, designed to deliver long-range precision fires in diverse environments. Its primary goal is to provide Combatant Commanders with a reliable, all-weather missile system capable of engaging high-value, time-sensitive targets at distances up to 300 kilometers. This capability is crucial for shaping the battlefield and reducing risks to aircraft and crews by delivering precise strikes against both hard and soft stationary targets in open, complex, and urban settings.
The program aims to ensure precision accuracy and minimize collateral damage through advanced targeting technologies. The ATACMS system is designed to address concerns related to unexploded ordnance and lethal radii, making it suitable for operations in densely populated areas. These features align with broader objectives of enhancing operational effectiveness while maintaining safety and minimizing unintended impacts on civilian populations.
In fiscal year 2025, efforts will focus on completing delivery costs associated with previously procured missiles under the FY 2021 contract. This includes conducting Production Verification Tests (PVT), quality inspections, production validation, and performance verification analyses. The activities reflect a decrease from the previous year as the program transitions from procurement to delivery and fielding phases.
The ATACMS program supports both active and reserve components of the Armed Forces, playing a crucial role in homeland defense missions and domestic emergency responses. It also provides military support to civil authorities as outlined in Section 1815 of the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act. By achieving these objectives, the ATACMS ensures that the U.S. Army remains equipped with advanced capabilities necessary for modern warfare and national security challenges.
