2040A - Research, Development, Test and Evaluation, Army
Description
The Army Agile Innovation and Development-Applied Research program is dedicated to advancing the Army's modernization efforts through innovative research solutions. This initiative leverages strategic partnerships and cutting-edge technologies to maintain technological superiority. It supports the development of both hardware and software innovations, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, to address current technology gaps. The United States Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) and other key research institutions are instrumental in executing these efforts.
A critical component of this program is the Army Applied Innovation project, which aims to accelerate the integration of multi-disciplinary technologies into the Army's operations. By focusing on ideation and system-level integration, this project seeks to identify breakthrough technologies that can address strategic challenges. The Army Innovation Oversight Board evaluates and approves projects based on their potential to fill capability gaps, ensuring alignment with the Army Modernization Strategy. Collaboration with other innovation initiatives helps optimize technology investments and deliver capabilities efficiently.
Team Ignite was another initiative under this program that explored non-traditional technologies for rapid development. It emphasized collaboration across various domains to ensure a competitive advantage in future warfare scenarios. However, due to strategic realignments, Team Ignite was terminated in FY 2025 as its objectives were deemed sufficiently supported by existing Science & Technology programs.
The Science & Analysis for Autonomous Systems & Counter-Autonomy project focuses on understanding and developing autonomous systems within military operations. This effort includes creating digital models for combat simulations and assessing the vulnerabilities of autonomous systems. By investigating new analytical tools and methodologies, this project aims to enhance the robustness of technology readiness assessments and reduce developmental risks. The work aligns with broader defense priorities, significantly contributing to the Army's future operational capabilities.
