Description
The Anti-Armor Missile-Javelin program is designed to equip the United States Marine Corps with a versatile, man-portable missile system capable of engaging a variety of targets, including armored vehicles and fortifications. The primary goal is to enhance the Marines' operational capabilities in diverse combat scenarios, providing them with a reliable medium-range anti-armor solution. The Javelin's fire-and-forget technology allows operators to engage targets without continuous tracking, increasing both safety and effectiveness in combat situations.
A key objective of the program is to maintain and upgrade the Javelin system to address evolving threats and technological advancements. This includes procuring new Lightweight Command Launch Units (LWCLU) and associated training devices to replace older models that are becoming obsolete. These upgrades aim to extend the maximum range of the missiles and ensure that the Marine Corps retains a tactical advantage on the battlefield. Additionally, engineering support and logistical services are integral components of this initiative, ensuring that the system remains operationally effective throughout its lifecycle.
The program also emphasizes quality assurance and manufacturing oversight to ensure that each missile meets stringent performance standards. This involves rigorous testing protocols such as First Article Acceptance Testing and Lot Acceptance Testing. Furthermore, adjustments in design for form, fit, and function are made as necessary to maintain high-quality production standards. The increase in procurement from 91 missiles in FY 2024 to 123 in FY 2025 reflects a strategic decision to bolster inventory levels while accommodating rising unit costs due to inflation and other economic factors.
The Anti-Armor Missile-Javelin program represents a significant investment in maintaining the Marine Corps' combat readiness through advanced missile technology. By focusing on both procurement and modernization efforts, this initiative seeks to ensure that U.S. forces are equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry capable of meeting current and future operational demands.
