Description
The Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM) program, managed by the United States Air Force in partnership with the United States Navy, is focused on enhancing air combat capabilities through the acquisition of advanced radar-guided missiles. The primary aim is to meet warfighter requirements by acquiring 462 AMRAAM missiles in FY 2025. These missiles are engineered to perform effectively in various environments, including electronic attack scenarios, and incorporate improvements such as GPS-aided navigation and two-way datalink capabilities.

The program also addresses Diminishing Manufacturing Sources (DMS) issues to ensure the availability of necessary components for future production. This includes procuring training equipment and upgrading test equipment to support different AMRAAM configurations. Efforts are made to resolve obsolescence issues and conduct studies to maintain production capabilities. Additionally, the program seeks to optimize procurement through Economic Order Quantities (EOQ) financing, aiming to reduce costs and enhance production efficiency.

In FY 2024, a Multiyear Procurement (MYP) strategy was initiated under the Large Lot Procurement (LLP) concept. This approach involves executing concurrent MYPs across related missile programs like JASSM, LRASM, and Standard Missile-6. The strategy is designed to create synergies in production, leading to increased capacity, faster delivery times, and reduced unit costs. Although EOQ financing was not requested for FY 2025, the strategy leverages savings from EOQ financing to procure additional missile lots under a Buy-to-budget concept.

The AMRAAM program emphasizes enhancing missile performance and ensuring readiness for diverse operational needs while maintaining cost efficiency through strategic procurement practices. The program's objectives align with broader defense goals of maintaining technological superiority and operational readiness in air combat scenarios.
