Air-Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM)

The Air-Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM) program, managed by the Air Force, is dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the capabilities of the AGM-86B missile. This strategic nuclear missile, operational since 1982, is designed to evade defenses and deliver payloads within enemy territories. The program's primary objective is to support the Air Force's strategic nuclear deterrence and Global Strike mission requirements until it is replaced by the Long Range Stand Off (LRSO) cruise missile. To achieve this, the program emphasizes research, development, testing, and evaluation efforts to ensure the missile's sustainability and reliability.

A key component of the ALCM program is the Test Plan Development and Evaluation initiative. This effort involves creating and implementing procedures for testing nuclear systems in compliance with directives from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The program addresses Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear susceptibility through rigorous testing protocols. Preparations are also underway for High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse testing scheduled for 2026, which will further assess the missile's resilience in extreme conditions.

The ALCM program includes a Service Life Extension Program aimed at addressing age-related issues to ensure continued reliability until the transition to LRSO. Technology insertion plays a crucial role in maintaining serviceability of components nearing end-of-life. The program utilizes both organic and contractor agencies for test development and execution, employing contracts to facilitate these efforts.

The ALCM program seeks to proactively identify potential reliability issues through low-cost modifications and ongoing surveillance analysis.
