Description
The Air Defense Targets program is designed to enhance the training capabilities of Air Defense Artillery (ADA) units within the Army. This initiative focuses on procuring target hardware and associated training devices, including scoring systems, payloads, and ground support equipment. The primary objective is to facilitate comprehensive training for ADA soldiers, ensuring they meet the standards outlined in Department of the Army Pamphlet 350-38. This includes gunnery tables and aerial target tracking exercises, which are essential for maintaining operational readiness.
A key goal of the program is to support collective training exercises and Force Development Test and Experimentation (FDT&E) investigations. These activities are crucial for developing engagement techniques against small unmanned aircraft systems. The program also supports Missile Live Fire training when missiles are allocated according to the Missile Distribution Plan. By providing these resources, it ensures that U.S. Army Avenger and Initial Maneuver Short-Range Air Defense (IM-SHORAD) systems are effectively utilized worldwide.
The program's objectives align with broader Army training requirements as generated by Major Field Commands, Training Centers, Division Level Commands, and real-world mission rehearsals. These requirements have been reviewed and validated against ongoing force restructuring efforts and are consistent with approved training doctrines. The targets procured through this initiative are necessary to meet Army Regulation 220-1 training requirements, which support unit readiness and soldier qualification.
In accordance with Section 1815 of the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act, this program is essential for both active and reserve components of the Armed Forces. It plays a vital role in homeland defense missions, domestic emergency responses, and providing military support to civil authorities. By ensuring that ADA units have access to high-quality training resources, the Air Defense Targets program contributes significantly to maintaining national security and preparedness.
