Description
The Air Force Network (AFNET) program focuses on enhancing the Air Force's wide area network through the procurement and upgrade of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) solutions. This initiative aims to implement, deliver, and upgrade IT equipment and technology such as firewalls, routers, and servers. The primary objective is to support Air Force Information Network Operations (AFINOps), which includes ensuring robust network defense capabilities. The program emphasizes cybersecurity by providing defense-in-depth capabilities critical for protecting AFNET data and securing strategic entry points into the Department of Defense Information Network (DODIN).
A significant component of the AFNET program is the transition to Next Generation Gateway capabilities, replacing existing AFNET Gateway boundary equipment. This transition supports upgrades of critical IT infrastructure at Air Force installations to defend against potential adversarial threats. Projects under this initiative include installation processing nodes, Information Management Suite (IMS), SIPRNet C2 Nodes, Dual Path Resiliency base boundary upgrades, enterprise network security, network situational awareness, and command and control capabilities. These projects are designed to ensure seamless information flow across terrestrial, air, and space-based networks.
The program also encompasses efforts within the Air Force Intranet Control (AFINC) and Cyberspace Security and Control System (CSCS) weapon systems. AFINC focuses on procuring and installing equipment for network operations and defense, managing AFNET Gateways, IMS, and Service Delivery Point Routers while adhering to Zero Trust principles. CSCS aims to enhance cyber mission assurance through proactive defense measures and persistent network operations. Modifications within CSCS support fault resolution, network security actions at base-level Network Control Centers, monitoring of network services, managing boundary protection devices, and maintaining continuous network situational awareness.
The AFNET program aligns with Department of Defense standards and specifications by transforming Air Force Information Operations towards a more secure framework. The procurement efforts include system equipment acquisition, engineering/integration services, certification/accreditation processes, deployment activities, testing procedures, training systems/equipment provision, and interim contractor support. These activities are coordinated under the guidance of SAF/CIO direction to ensure comprehensive support across the Air Force Information Enterprise.
