Description
The AF Defensive Cyberspace Operations program is designed to enhance the Department of the Air Force's ability to manage and protect its cyber infrastructure against evolving threats. It focuses on developing capabilities that ensure the security and integrity of systems crucial for air campaigns, providing increased situational awareness and defense mechanisms.

A key component of this initiative is the Integrated Defensive Cyberspace System (IDCS), which aims to unify network defense and cyber protection efforts. This allows for coordinated cyber missions using shared data. The IDCS safeguards the Air Force Information Network and Department of Defense network enclaves from unauthorized access, data breaches, and other cyber threats. It integrates legacy systems into a modern architecture that supports continuous research, development, testing, and operational feedback-driven improvements.

The system is operated by a diverse force comprising Active Duty, Air National Guard, and Air Force Reserve Command personnel. It facilitates rapid deployment of defensive cyber sensors and employs both automated decision-making and human-machine teaming to counteract vulnerabilities.

Within this program, the Firestarter project focuses on advancing Cyber Defense and Information Assurance technologies to protect Air Force Command, Control, Communications, Computer, and Intelligence systems. This involves proactive defense measures such as threat recognition, damage assessment, recovery strategies, and active response methodologies. Firestarter leverages investments from various agencies like US Cyber Command and DARPA to develop solutions that meet Air Force cybersecurity requirements.

Additionally, the Cyberspace Vulnerability Assessment project provides mobile precision capabilities for identifying and mitigating cyberspace threats through defensive sorties worldwide. This effort enhances command control situational awareness and supports the transition of legacy capabilities to the IDCS framework. The program's acquisition strategy emphasizes agile development processes and integration with existing Department of Defense architectures to deliver effective mission capabilities efficiently.
