Description
The Ultra-Light Tactical Vehicle (ULTV) under the Navy's Procurement, Marine Corps budget activity, aims to provide operational capabilities for infantry logistics, long-range surveillance, and reconnaissance missions in support of distributed heliborne operations. The ULTV is part of the Family of Ultra-light Tactical Vehicles (FULTV), which includes the Utility Task Vehicle (UTV) and its replacement, the ULTV. The vehicles are designed to increase logistics support for units while reducing the combat load burden on individual Marines and providing casualty evacuation for wounded Marines. The ULTVs are transportable in various aircraft and mitigate mobility capability gaps for infantry units, reconnaissance battalions, and wing support squadrons. The program also aims to replace the UTV with the ULTV, leveraging technology upgrades to improve operational capabilities.
Efforts are underway to replace the UTV with the ULTV to achieve outcomes such as a lighter, faster, more maneuverable, and more resilient force with increased ability to operate and be sustained in austere environments. The ULTVs are expected to reduce operational risk through a smaller logistics footprint and threat exposure while increasing autonomy and tactical mobility at the company-level and below. The line item will provide for any safety-related configuration changes of fielded UTVs prior to their replacement by the ULTV. This approach ensures proper in-service management and vehicle sustainment while allowing for improvements as needed to respond to evolving Marine Corps requirements affecting vehicle reliability, safety, availability, and readiness. The ULTVs will begin replacing the UTVs in FY 2023, with safety and reliability modifications planned throughout their life cycle to ensure maximum readiness as vehicles age.
