Ship Self Defense (Detect & Control)

Ship Self Def (Detect & Cntrl) under the Navy's Research, Development, Test & Evaluation budget activity, aims to provide upgrades and integration of new equipment and systems for Aircraft Carriers and Amphibious Class ships' Ship Self Defense System (SSDS) MK 2 Combat System. The program includes efforts to pace the threat and capture advances in technology, such as advanced information assurance and cyber defense, Fire Control Loop Improvement Project (FCLIP), Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) Mode 5, and other command and control systems. Additionally, the program integrates new combat system war-fighting capabilities and improvements, as well as enhanced cybersecurity capabilities. It also supports anti-terrorism/force protection missions through the Non-Lethal weapons project.

Furthermore, the program encompasses efforts to provide enhancements and upgrades to the SSDS Total Ship Training Capability components within the combat system. This includes addressing training capability needs in conjunction with SSDS MK 2 capability improvements, IFF Mode 5, Task Force Cyber Awakening Boundary Defense Capability (BDC), and Technical Insertion efforts under PU 2178 (QRCC). The goal is to enable the individual warfighter to engage in more complex training scenarios to support fleet required training certification events. The program also supports the Chief of Naval Operations Fleet Response Plan and Commander United States Fleet Forces Command Fleet Readiness Training Plan by addressing current and future training requirements.
