Satellite Communications Systems

Satellite Communications Systems is a Navy initiative aimed at procuring shipboard terminal equipment for ship-to-ship, ship-to-shore, and ship-to-aircraft tactical communications via earth orbiting relay satellites. This includes Radio Frequency (RF) equipment and baseband equipment assembled and grouped into systems and subsystems structured to address specific naval communications requirements. The program supports the procurement of additional Commercial Broadband Satellite Program (CBSP) Unit Level Variant (ULV) terminals and installations to meet DDG ship class fielding requirements. Additionally, it includes the procurement and installations of Satellite Terminal (transportable) Non-Geostationary (STtNG) terminals to enhance the Navy's Assured Command and Control (AC2) posture, SATCOM reliability, space resiliency via band diversity, and redundancy.

The funding request for Program 3215 also supports the modernization of UHF DAMA and MINI DAMA systems to enable Command and Control (C2) voice and data communications over Satellite and Line of Sight (LOS) links. The program aligns with the Navy's foundational priorities of readiness and capabilities as outlined in the Chief of Naval Operations 2022 Navigation Plan. Additionally, it provides for the engineering, testing, procurement, and product integration efforts for Thornton TRANSEC Algorithm Modernization (TTAM), which is essential for secure, interoperable information sharing in UHF legacy communications systems.
