Description
Rockets is a procurement program under the Air Force's 3011F: Procurement of Ammunition. The program aims to acquire rockets, launchers, warheads, and guidance sections to constitute the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II (APKWS II) all-up-round (AUR). This includes the procurement of the APKWS II guidance sections through the Department of the Navy PMA-242 at Patuxent River Naval Air Station. The program's specific objectives include enhancing crew survivability by providing greater precision, reduced collateral damage, and increased standoff range. Additionally, the program supports various missions such as low collateral damage engagements, target marking, and battlefield illumination. The rockets are employed on A-10 and F-16 aircraft and are effective in any terrain, including urban, desert, and mountainous environments.
The Rockets program also aims to support homeland defense missions, domestic emergency responses, and providing military support to civil authorities. It addresses production Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS) and obsolescence issues through studies, bridge buys, life of type buys, supplier/parts replacement, and qualification activities to preserve future production capabilities and capacities. Furthermore, the program leverages digital acquisition tenets of open, agile, and digital while investing in analytical, information management, data management, digital environments, networks, facilities, and security infrastructure upgrades directly supporting the development and sustainment of its capabilities.
