3 - Torpedoes and related equipment
Description
MK-48 Torpedo ADCAP Mods is a part of the Navy's Weapons Procurement budget activity, specifically focusing on the modification of torpedoes and related equipment. The program aims to procure and modify the MK-48 torpedo components, including the Guidance & Control Box (GCB), Broadband Sonar Analog Receiver (BSAR), and preamplifier. These modifications are essential for improving advanced threat countermeasures capabilities and enhancing the torpedo's performance in various conditions such as shallow water, low Doppler targets, and improved fuzing. Additionally, the program includes funding for engineering services, non-recurring engineering (NRE), installation, and support and ancillary equipment procurement to ensure the successful implementation of these modifications.
The specific objectives of Program 3225 include the procurement and modification of hardware kits for the MK-48 torpedo system to enhance its capabilities in countering advanced threats. This involves funding for engineering services, including studies, plans, design changes, and implementation of design changes by contractors to address obsolescence issues that may arise during contract performance. Furthermore, the program allocates resources for non-recurring engineering (NRE) to resolve production issues and support government testing through the procurement of Proof of Manufacturing (POM) units. Additionally, funding is provided for installation activities to upgrade the MK 48 MOD 6 Torpedo into a MK 48 MOD 7 Torpedo by installing components such as pre-amps, guidance control boxes, EMI filters, and Broadband Sonar Analog Receivers (BSAR). Lastly, the program includes funds for addressing diminishing manufacturing sources by procuring obsolete electronic parts to avoid costly redesigns during production.
