MK-48 Torpedo

The MK-48 Torpedo is a procurement program under the Navy's Weapons Procurement activity, specifically focused on torpedoes and related equipment. The primary goal of this program is to provide the U.S. Navy's submarine force with an effective weapon against threat submarines and surface combatants to assist in achieving Sea Control and neutralizing or destroying threats to high-value vessels. The program aims to increase the Warshot inventory to address increased Naval Munitions Requirement Process (NMRP) requirements gap. Additionally, it supports the award and execution of competitive contracts for procurement of the MK 48 MOD 7 Torpedo Guidance and Control & Warhead Electronic Systems (WES) Sections, as well as Afterbody Tail Cone & Fuel Tank Sections.

The objectives of Program 3117 include funding for various elements such as engineering services, non-recurring engineering (NRE) efforts, installation costs for government installation and integration of torpedo sections, and addressing obsolescence issues through Diminishing Manufacturing Sources (DMS) funds. The program also supports the procurement and maintenance of support equipment, technology refresh of test equipment at Naval Undersea Warfare Centers (NUWC), production engineering tasks performed by NUWC, quality assurance tasks performed by NUWC Keyport (KPT) and Newport (NPT), and acceptance testing of prime contractor hardware sections in an MK 48 MOD 7 All-Up Round (AUR) Torpedo. These efforts are essential for ensuring the effectiveness and readiness of the MK-48 Torpedo system within the U.S. Navy's arsenal.
