Description
Gray Eagle Mods2 aims to modernize the MQ-1C Gray Eagle Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) to provide the Army with an Extended Range, Multi-Purpose capability in Multi-Domain Operations (MDO). The program's specific goals include the procurement of expeditionary ground equipment, datalinks, avionics, payloads, and aircraft systems in a Modular Open System Architecture (MOSA) to support Army Assured-Positioning Navigation and Timing (A-PNT) requirements. Additionally, the program aims to address obsolescence while maintaining a MDO-ready capability by integrating new SATCOM ground and air vehicle equipment, new air vehicle avionics, and system re-architecture through the partitioning and updating of software. The program also supports the procurement, development, and integration to field Link-16 and a new engine propulsion system for the MQ-1C Gray Eagle fleet.
Furthermore, the program seeks to enhance operations in contested environments, reduce cognitive burden for soldiers, and establish an architecture that enables integration of future payloads to support Multi-Domain Operations. This includes enabling multi-band communication for Beyond Line of Sight data transmission, replacing obsolete processors, improving system processing, increasing throughput and memory capability. The program also supports multi-phased integration efforts of hardware and software procurement to allow the MQ-1C Gray Eagle to survive, persist, and thrive in GPS denied environments resulting in the fielding of M-Code navigators as required by Public Law 111-383.
