Description
AVENGER MODS aims to enhance the operational capability of the Avenger system, a lightweight, ground-to-air missile and gun weapon system mounted on a High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle. The program's specific objectives include addressing obsolescence of key Avenger components to ensure operational capability through FY 2031. This involves the procurement and fielding support for 167 Mode 5 Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) systems with spares. Additionally, the program focuses on upgrading critical subsystems such as the Vehicle Internal Communications System (VIC-5), Avenger Fire Control Computer (AFCC), and Assured Positioning Navigation and Timing (A-PNT) hardware to provide M-Code capability. These enhancements are crucial for maintaining the Avenger's effectiveness in countering unmanned aircraft systems, cruise missiles, and fixed and rotary wing threats.
The AVENGER MODS program also supports the incorporation of Mode 5 IFF into the Avenger system to comply with Department of Defense standards, ensuring cooperative target identification capability and relevance in Air Defense and Homeland Defense missions. Furthermore, it addresses the Slew-to-Cue upgrade, Targeting Consoles (TC), and M3P .50 CAL machine guns. The program's funding request for FY 2024 supports the procurement of Mode 5 IFF with spares and fielding support, aligning with homeland defense missions, domestic emergency responses, and military support to civil authorities as mandated by Section 1815 of the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act (P.L. 110-181).
