Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
The Scanning High-Resolution Interferometer Sounder (S-HIS) aircraft instrument, developed at UW-SSEC, has demonstrated state-of-the-art performance and unprecedented robustness and reliability over 20+ years of operation. It is recognized as a key government asset as an infrared calibration reference standard that is crucial for weather satellite calibration validation and an important tool for studying weather phenomenon, such as hurricanes and severe storms.
Due to its age, a replacement of the S-HIS is becoming necessary. This project begins that process through breadboard testing of key subsystems to reduce programmatic and technical risk of the eventual replacement instrument development program. Ultimately, the new S-HIS will be capable of playing a key role in the development and validation of the future generations of weather satellites.
