Description

Posted: Feb. 4, 2026, 12:00 a.m. EST
The National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Metastasis Research Network (MetNet) is a collection of U54 Research Centers that support using systems-level approaches to understand pressing questions in metastasis. The overall goal of the MetNet is to advance our understanding of metastasis as a whole body, systems-level problem to develop a comprehensive and cohesive picture of the processes involved. Through this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), the NCI invites applications for MetNet Research Projects. These Research Projects should be defined as discrete entities that use systems-level approaches to address gaps and opportunities in metastasis research to integrate into the MetNet and complement ongoing research across the Network.

Background
The National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Metastasis Research Network (MetNet) is a collection of U54 Research Centers aimed at utilizing systems-level approaches to tackle significant questions in metastasis. The overarching goal of the MetNet is to enhance the understanding of metastasis as a complex, whole-body problem, thereby developing a comprehensive view of the processes involved. This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) invites applications for MetNet Research Projects that are discrete entities employing systems-level methodologies to fill gaps in metastasis research and complement ongoing studies within the Network.

Grant Details
The NCI seeks applications for research projects that utilize integrative systems-level approaches to address specific questions in metastasis research. Projects should integrate with the MetNet and focus on central themes such as dormancy, early dissemination, cellular and physical microenvironment interactions, and responses by metastatic cells to therapies. Specific areas of interest include:
1) Early dissemination and crosstalk related to metastasis from various organs;
2) Mechanisms of dormancy and emergence from dormancy;
3) Factors influencing pre-metastatic niche conditioning;
4) Development of experimental models that address multiple steps in the metastatic process;
5) Integration of metastasis with macroenvironmental factors;
6) Novel tools for tracking metastatic cells in vivo. Awardees will participate in all MetNet activities, including serving on the Steering Committee.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, local governments, state governments, tribal governments, and foreign organizations. Individuals with necessary skills and resources can also apply as Program Directors/Principal Investigators (PDs/PIs). Applicants may submit multiple distinct applications but cannot submit overlapping proposals.

Period of Performance
Project periods may extend up to 5 years.

Grant Value
The maximum budget for each application is limited to $500,000 in direct costs per year. The total number of awards will depend on NIH appropriations and the submission of meritorious applications.
