Specially Adapted Housing Assistive Technology (SAHAT) Grant Program

Background
The Loan Guaranty Service (LGY), an office of the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), is announcing the availability of funds for the Specially Adapted Housing Assistive Technology (SAHAT) Grant Program. The objective of the grant is to encourage the development of new assistive technologies for specially adapted housing. VA acknowledges there are many emerging technologies that could improve home adaptations or otherwise enhance a Veteran’s or Servicemember’s ability to live independently.

Grant Details
The SAHAT Grant Program aims to provide grants of financial assistance to develop new assistive technology for adapted housing. The program does not support the construction or modification of residential dwellings for accessibility. The program is authorized by Public Law 111-275, the Veterans’ Benefits Act of 2010, and has been extended through September 30, 2022. The Secretary has identified innovation and unmet needs as top priorities for FY 2022. The program will fund operations for FY 2022 and expects to announce grant recipients by April 1, 2022.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include 'person or entity' as defined by 38 U.S.C. 2108. There is no cost sharing or matching requirement for the SAHAT Grant Program. All technology grant applications must meet specific threshold criteria, including involving new assistive technologies that aid or enhance the ability of a Veteran or Service member to live in an adapted home.

Period of Performance
The anticipated start date for funding grants awarded under this announcement is after April 1, 2022. The performance period should not last longer than 12 months.

Grant Value
The maximum amount of assistance a technology grant applicant may receive in any fiscal year is limited to $200,000.
