Small Business Informatics Tools for the Pangenome (R43 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

ID: PAR-25-308 • Type: Posted

Description

This PAR seeks applications from eligible Small Business Concerns (SBCs) for the development of informatics tools with commercial potential to facilitate uptake and scientific use of the human pangenome reference being developed and maintained by the NHGRI Human Genome Reference Program (HGRP). This PAR specifically calls for innovative Phase I SBIR applications from SBCs to demonstrate proof of principle or viability of informatics tools for use of the human pangenome. Emphasis will be on the development of tools to advance compelling use cases that are relevant to different broad sectors of the genomics community, e.g., clinical, population, and functional genomics.
Background
The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) supports the Human Genome Reference Program (HGRP), which aims to improve the human genome reference by incorporating data from diverse genomes into a pangenome representation.

This grant opportunity seeks applications from eligible Small Business Concerns (SBCs) for the development of informatics tools that facilitate the uptake and scientific use of the human pangenome reference. The goal is to foster innovation in genomics technologies that can enhance health outcomes and promote the adoption of genomic data in various sectors, including clinical and population genomics.

Grant Details
This funding opportunity specifically calls for innovative Phase I SBIR applications from SBCs to demonstrate proof of principle or viability of informatics tools for use with the human pangenome.

Emphasis will be on developing tools that advance compelling use cases relevant to different sectors of the genomics community, such as clinical, population, and functional genomics. Projects may build upon existing infrastructure tools used by the Human Pangenome Reference Consortium but should not aim to create entirely new infrastructure.

Possible examples of tools include applications for selecting genome subsets for alignments, creating visualization tools for structural variation, integrating multi-omic data, and annotating disease associations. The proposed tools should demonstrate commercial potential and a clearly defined user base.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants are only United States small business concerns (SBCs) that are organized for profit and primarily operate within the U.S. They must be more than 50% owned and controlled by U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens. Additionally, SBCs must have not more than 500 employees at the time of award.

Period of Performance
The duration of projects under this grant may be up to 1 year.

Grant Value
Budgets up to $400K total costs for Phase I may be requested.

Place of Performance
The grant will be performed within the United States.
