Schizophrenia and related disorders during mid- to late-life (R01 Clinical Trial Optional)

ID: PAR-25-039 • Type: Posted

Description

Although the majority living with schizophrenia and related disorders are over 35 years old, including those first diagnosed and those aging with the illness, the mechanisms underlying the generation and trajectory of the illness remain poorly understood. The purpose of this initiative is to advance translational research to better understand the emergence and trajectory of schizophrenia and related disorders in mid to late life, and to identity targets for future development of prevention and treatment efforts.
Background
The National Institutes of Health (NIH), specifically the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), is issuing this funding opportunity to advance translational research focused on schizophrenia and related disorders during mid- to late-life. This initiative aims to address the significant gap in understanding the emergence, trajectory, and outcomes of these disorders in individuals aged 35 and older, who represent a substantial portion of the affected population. The goal is to identify mechanisms that could lead to improved prevention and treatment strategies for this demographic.

Grant Details
This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) encourages applications that will advance research on the emergence, trajectory, and outcomes of schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders in mid- to late-life. Research should focus on identifying neurobiological, behavioral, psychosocial, and environmental mechanisms underlying these disorders. Specific areas of interest include:
1) Understanding phenomenology and etiology of first-episode psychosis in mid- to late-life;
2) Mechanisms for increased dementia risk among individuals with schizophrenia;
3) Studies on biological aging processes influencing psychopathology;
4) Impact of social determinants of health on minority populations;
5) Mechanisms of resilience and recovery;
6) Identification of brain circuits as targets for intervention. The research must leverage interdisciplinary approaches and may involve high-risk/high-reward projects.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public or private), non-profits, for-profit organizations (including small businesses), local/state governments, tribal governments, and foreign organizations. Applications from diverse teams including those with lived experience are encouraged. Individuals from underrepresented groups are also encouraged to apply.

Period of Performance
The maximum project period is 5 years. Specific timelines will depend on the scope of the proposed project.

Grant Value
Application budgets are not limited but must reflect the actual needs of the proposed project. The number of awards will depend on NIH appropriations and the submission of meritorious applications.
