Background
The NPS Chesapeake Gateways Office, part of the U.S. Department of the Interior's National Park Service, aims to inspire and assist communities in discovering and connecting with the natural and cultural heritage of the Chesapeake Bay.

The goal of the NPS Chesapeake Gateways Tourism and Economic Development Grants is to enhance public education and access to the Chesapeake Bay watershed through community collaboration projects that link local tourism with economic impact, as outlined in the Chesapeake Bay Initiative Act of 1998.

Grant Details
The grant opportunity supports two categories:

1) Linking Tourism and Economic Development Grants, which should demonstrate community needs linking local recreation, culture, history, and/or nature tourism to economic impact. Projects may enhance visitor experiences, support Indigenous tourism development, improve accessibility, and promote connectivity between outdoor spaces.

2) Event Support Grants for events that celebrate the cultural, historical, natural, or recreational legacy of Chesapeake Gateways communities. These events should encourage exploration and inclusivity while drawing diverse audiences.

Funding restrictions include prohibiting costs for alcohol or lobbying activities. The maximum award for Linking Tourism grants is $100,000; for Event Support grants, it is $25,000.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include state governments, county governments, city or township governments, special district governments, independent school districts, public and state-controlled institutions of higher education, Native American tribal governments (Federally recognized), nonprofit organizations (with or without 501(c)(3) status), private institutions of higher education, for-profit organizations (other than small businesses), and small businesses.

Projects must take place within the Chesapeake watershed to be considered.
