The purpose of this notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) is to solicit applications from eligible organizations to participate in a cooperative research group, the Mucosal Immunology Studies Team (MIST), focusing on immune mechanisms and immune regulation at mucosal surfaces of the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urogenital tracts. The main objective of this program is to break new ground in the understanding of basic mucosal immune mechanisms by introducing new ideas, approaches, and technologies that address difficult questions in mucosal immunology

Background
The National Institutes of Health (NIH), specifically the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), is issuing this notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications for the Mucosal Immunology Studies Team (MIST). The goal of this program is to advance the understanding of immune mechanisms and regulation at mucosal surfaces in the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urogenital tracts.

The MIST program aims to foster innovative research that addresses complex questions in mucosal immunology, ultimately contributing to better health outcomes.

Grant Details
The MIST program supports research that defines fundamental aspects of immunity at mucosal surfaces. Key areas of interest include:
1) Mucosal Epithelium: Investigating barrier functions, antigen sampling, and immune response orchestration;
2) Mucosal Immunoglobulin and B Cell Responses: Understanding IgA production and its role in immunity;
3) Mucosal Immunity and Inflammation: Exploring mechanisms that regulate immune responses to prevent tissue damage;
4) Cross-talk between the mucosal immune system and the nervous system;
5) Mucosal Immunity in Systemic Health and Disease: Examining how mucosal immunity impacts overall health.

Studies must utilize relevant animal models or human tissues and should not focus on clinical trials or specific pathogens without a broader immunological context.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, local governments, state governments, tribal governments, and foreign organizations. Applicants must have the necessary skills and resources to conduct the proposed research. There are no specific cost-sharing requirements.

Period of Performance
The maximum project period is five years. The earliest start date for funded projects is anticipated to be October 21, 2025.

Grant Value
NIAID intends to commit $3,000,000 in FY 2026 to fund approximately 4-5 awards. Each application budget should not exceed $350,000 direct costs per year.
