Description

The USGS is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for research in bat distribution, activity, and disease status on two US Navy properties.Bats are key components of Pacific Northwest ecosystems and provide many essential ecosystem services, yet their activity patterns and dynamics remain relatively unknown in the West. Bats are of particular concern due to the spread of the fungal pathogen Psuedogymnoascus destructans (Pd), which causes the disease white-nose syndrome (WNS) and has caused devastating population declines in other parts of the country. The US Navy is working with the USGS to assess the presence, activity, and disease status of the bat community on two Naval properties in Washington (Jim Creek Naval Radio Station) and Idaho (Bayview Acoustic Research Detachment) to better understand their use of these habitats and enhance regional understanding of bat status. The USGS is offering a funding opportunity to CESU partners for assistance with analyses of these data.
Background
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is offering a funding opportunity through a cooperative agreement for research on bat distribution, activity, and disease status on two U.S. Navy properties in Washington and Idaho. Bats play a crucial role in Pacific Northwest ecosystems, providing essential services, yet their activity patterns are not well understood.

The spread of the fungal pathogen Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd), which causes white-nose syndrome (WNS), poses significant threats to bat populations. This project aims to assess the presence and health of bat communities on Naval properties to enhance understanding of their ecological roles.

Grant Details
The project has two primary objectives:

(1) Analyze bat acoustic data to confirm the presence, activity, and phenology of various bat species inhabiting the Jim Creek Naval Radio Station in Washington and the Bayview Acoustic Research Detachment in Idaho;

(2) Analyze samples for the presence of Pd at these locations. The recipient will assist with data analyses related to these objectives.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible recipients must be participating partners of the Pacific Northwest Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CESU) Program.

Period of Performance
The project is anticipated to last for one year.

Grant Value
The total estimated funding for this project is $40,000, with one award expected.

Place of Performance
The research will be conducted at two U.S. Navy properties: Jim Creek Naval Radio Station in Washington and Bayview Acoustic Research Detachment in Idaho.
