Abstract
The Navy is interested in a fully function application that is capable of robust automatic maritime target recognition. Namely, the system should be capable of (1) classifying combatant from non-combatant ships and (2) further identifying the specific type of ship when range and visibility permits. Robust here refers to the system s ability to adapt to a wide range of problems in a systematic and reliable way regardless of changes in the underlying environment. Toyon Research Corp. proposes a template matching algorithm that will make use of 3D simulated physical models available in the public and private domain of maritime vessels to perform classification. The template-based approach has been developed and enhanced over several related works. As research progresses, Toyon may leverage machine learning methods to supplement its performance or perform a secondary task within the system.
Research Objective
The goal of phase I is to establish the technical merit, feasibility, and commercial potential of proposed R&D efforts and determine the quality of performance of the small business awardee organization.
