Title
Synthetic Vision System for Ground Forces
Abstract
VRR's Fused Augmented Realties with Synthetic Vision (FAR/SV) software module added on to Warfighter Augmented Reality (WAR) systems are designed to enhance situational awareness and accelerate effective decision making for Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs). FAR/SV module's existing successful visualization innovations will be scientifically evolved for JTACs using WAR Augmented Reality Head Mounted Displays (AR-HMDs).Our VRR/Old Dominion University/Lockheed Martin team characterizes this ONR/NAVAIR effort as low-risk and high-payoff based upon similar FAR/SV modular enhancements to AR-HMD visualizations for Nett Warrior Users (OSD/Army sponsored) and Naval Landing Systems Officers (NAVAIR sponsored). To be clear, our ongoing OSD/Army and NAVAIR efforts do NOT include fire and close air support use cases central to this effort. Our team envisions multiple win/win exploitations between our three AR-HMD based visualization projects.Key innovations include AR-HMD optimized text displays, control measures, splash zones, and JTAC requested Navigation modes; along with Synthetic Vision wider field of view (especially useful used with narrow field of view high-magnification tasks); Intuitive low cognitive workload augmented reality graphics (eyes stay on target areas); and perfect viewing conditions 24/7/365 augmenting real-world viewing with Unity3D synthetic vision terrains. Additional innovations are included within the non-public areas of this document.
Research Objective
The goal of phase II is to continue the R&D efforts initiated in Phase I. Funding is based on the results achieved in Phase I and the scientific and technical merit and commercial potential of the project proposed in Phase II.
