Abstract
Fast and early medical diagnosis requires the detection of multi-omics biomarker species. This is especially important when assessing the pathophysiology of psychological diseases like PTSD. Associated biomarkers can be identified on the gene, epigene, protein, and metabolite layers of omics. For example, DNA methylation markers have been used to biotype PTSD patients. Additionally, metabolites and miRNAs have been used as blood diagnostic markers. Effective detection and quantification of these species will allow for improved medical diagnostics and treatment, both in the military and civilian populations. Current detection of metabolites and other associated biomarkers require mass spectrometry or complicated assays, resulting in centralized analysis and long lead times for test results. Improved biomarker detection at the point of care would significantly reduce test result time and improve patient care. Triton s solution is a portable, automated device for biomarker detection and quantification at the patient s point of care. This device will accept blood, urine, or saliva sample and provide a calibrated measurement of selected biomarker levels within the sample, translated for diagnostic purposes and interpretation. The final device will have a minimal footprint for use on site, at the bedside, or at minimally supervised clinics, with a rapid sampling time. Additionally, the device will include a simple user interface to allow for ease of use, with no sample preparation or advanced training requirement.
Research Objective
The goal of phase I is to establish the technical merit, feasibility, and commercial potential of proposed R&D efforts and determine the quality of performance of the small business awardee organization. STTRs are completed in conjunction with a research institution.
