Title
Augmenting ProPatch, a BATDOK-Integrated Compact Patient Monitor, with Compensatory Reserve Measure using Physiological Simulator
Abstract
A future war is anticipated to be with a peer or near-peer adversary that may pose a significant threat to transport vehicles, thus casualty evacuations may be delayed or unavailable. This requires that the forward warfighter be equipped with portable medical monitoring equipment to improve triage, effective care, and casualty survival rate at the point of injury. Current gold standard patient monitoring equipment, such as a Zoll Propaq, Stryker Lifepak15, or Philips Tempus Pro, is too large and bulky to be carried by a forward medic. Even if this equipment was available, traditional hemodynamic measures like heartrate and blood pressure are insufficient in predicting hemorrhagic shock, the leading cause of death on the battlefield. Therefore, there is an unmet operational need to drastically miniaturize and augment gold standard equipment to enhance the effectiveness of the forward medic in austere environments. ProPatch seeks to address these needs by providing comprehensive physiological monitoring in a compact package, with the inclusion of next-generation vital signs for predicting hemorrhagic shock. The work proposed involves the development of Compensatory Reserve Measure (CRM), a next-generation vital sign that detects hypovolemia and impending hemorrhagic shock, for real-time deployment with ProPatch. CRM will be developed through the use of a digital simulator to generate realistic physiological waveforms that are representative of hypovolemia. Data will be collected with ProPatch using the simulator and a CRM model will be trained, validated, and tested. The developed CRM model will be deployed to the ProPatch Connect iOS App and to the ProPatch-BATDOK plugin. The completed system will be demonstrated to the identified DAF end-user.
Research Objective
The goal of phase II is to continue the R&D efforts initiated in Phase I. Funding is based on the results achieved in Phase I and the scientific and technical merit and commercial potential of the project proposed in Phase II.
