Description

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), in collaboration with the General Services Administration (GSA), is conducting market research to identify qualified firms capable of providing specialized fire protection engineering and life safety services. The primary goal of this initiative is to ensure that the VA Healthcare Systems across the United States and its territories adhere to stringent fire and life safety codes and standards. This effort aligns with the VA's commitment to maintaining high safety standards in the design, construction, and operation of its facilities as outlined in VHA Directive 7712 and other relevant guidelines.

The work requested involves comprehensive architectural, fire protection engineering, life safety, and code consulting services. Contractors will be tasked with updating existing life safety drawings or developing new ones based on current architectural plans also known as "Statement of Conditions Drawings" (SOC Drawings). These tasks require thorough field observations, reviews of existing conditions, and consultations with VA stations to produce a complete set of compliant life safety drawings. The deliverables must meet both Joint Commission and VA requirements.

Additionally, contractors are expected to conduct detailed fire protection and life safety assessments at various facilities. These assessments will include evaluating occupancy classifications, construction types, vertical openings, hazard protections, sprinkler systems extent, corridor protections/separations, building space subdivisions, smoke barriers, fire barriers, operating features pertinent to life safety drawing development, means of egress components/arrangements/suites/travel distances/exit discharges among others. The assessments must be thorough enough to confirm barrier/separation routing and other critical life safety features within all designated building areas.
