Description
The Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicles program, particularly the Advanced Payload Develop & Support project, is designed to enhance the Army's reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition capabilities. This initiative aligns with priorities set by the Headquarters Department of the Army and the Training and Doctrine Command for Unmanned Aircraft Systems. The project aims to develop payload systems that provide essential intelligence and surveillance support to Brigade Combat Teams, Divisions, and Corps.

A significant element of this program is the Common Sensor Payload (CSP), which incorporates Electro Optical/Infrared/Laser Designator technology. This technology delivers high-definition full-motion video across various spectrums, ensuring continuous imagery collection and target designation for precision attacks. Such capabilities enhance battlefield awareness and force protection. The CSP is primarily used with the Gray Eagle UAS, providing near real-time reconnaissance crucial for modern military operations.

To address technological obsolescence, the program is developing CSP Version 3 (v3), which includes improvements like Target Location Accuracy software to enhance target mensuration. The Army Acquisition Objective for CSP involves equipping each Gray Eagle UAS with a CSP unit plus additional spares. Although there is no request for Fiscal Year 2025, previous efforts have focused on increasing usability and lethality while reducing cognitive burdens on operators through software and hardware advancements.

The Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicles program highlights a commitment to advancing unmanned aerial technology to meet emerging military needs. By concentrating on payload development and integration, it supports ongoing transformation efforts within the Army to maintain operational superiority in diverse combat environments.
